Situation room meetings regarding the 2011 mission to kill Osama bin Laden were titled “Mickey Mouse meeting” on the official calendar, according to the new mission.
Last Friday, POLITICO reported bin Laden’s raid by 30 US political, military and intelligence officials Garrett M. Published an oral history written by Graeff, who was central to its success.
Officials said that on May 1, 2011, and due to the strike early the next day, several steps were taken to ensure that the news of the raid was not leaked.
Mike Morrell, then the CIA’s deputy director, told Politico that the idea to label the meetings a “Mickey Mouse meeting” was by John Brennan, then the White House’s Homeland Security and counter-terrorism adviser.
Brennan told the magazine, “We also had cameras and audio in the situation room covered or off.”
Ben-Rhodes, the then Deputy National Security Advisor, also told POLITICO that he knew that something serious was happening by looking at the titles of the meetings listed in the Situation Room schedule.
“Suddenly, there was a very unusual pace of deputies – and principal – level meetings without a subject. I knew something was happening,” he said.
“At no other point in my eight years in the White House did it happen until 2016 with Russian interference in the election.”
Former President Barack Obama was also keen to stop any news of his exit from the mission, especially if it eventually failed miserably.
Before the raids began on April 30, 2011, in the evening, Obama asked his speechwriter John Favreau to turn up a joke prepared for that night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where the president usually makes a speech himself.
Obama was going to make a mockery in which he cited “Tim ‘Laden Pavlanty” for replaying GOP figures to make fun of his middle name – Hussein – Obama, “Faveru told POLITICO.”
“He’s like, ‘Why don’t we say that his middle name is Hosni, like Hosni Mubarak?” I remember it just to be like, ‘It’s not that funny.’ And Obama is like, ‘Trust me on this. I really think Hosni would be great fun, ” said Faveru.
White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said: “No one could figure out why Obama made this change. It seemed like a strange change.”
President Joe Biden released a statement on Sunday stating that 10 years after the raid that killed the terrorist leader, we said: “We chased Laden to the gates of hell – and we got him.”
